Musi

The Musi River is a part of the history and heritage of Hyderabad city. It emerges from Anantagiri hills, about 90 km to the west of Hyderabad and flows through Vikarabad, Pargi, Chevella, Kalvakul, Palankul and Golkonda Mandals and reaches Osmansagar reservoir at Gandipet which was built in 1920 to contain the flood waters. Lack of proper conservation of forests and grass lands in Anantagiri area and diversions of water for cultivation of crops like paddy has resulted in less inflows into Osmansagar and lessened the flows in Musi in Summer months.

Thus, this once beautiful and plentiful river has been reduced to a trickle and with the drainage and sewage water flowing into it, has become a stinking drain. Due to rapid unplanned development of the city of Hyderabad, the quantity of sewage generated is many times more than the designed capacity of the Amberpet sewage treatment plant, resulting in a high percentage of under-treated and untreated sewage entering the river. Musi flows down and joins river Krishna at Wazirabad in Nalgonda District. Musi river flows through a major portion of Hyderabad and divides the historic old city with the new city..
