Expert Committee on Conservation of Dolphin..

In the first meeting of the NGRBA, it was decided that the Gangetic Dolphin, being one of the most important and evocative bio-indicators of ecological health of the river Ganga, be declared as ‘National Aquatic Animal’. In the meeting of the National Board for Wildlife held on 18th March, 2010, it was decided unanimously to declare Ganagetic Dolphin as National Aquatic Animal. A Group of Experts has been constituted by the Ministry of Environment and Forests in October, 2009 to
 Prioritize and identify critical stretches of the River Ganga and its tributaries where the Gangetic Dolphin need special attention;

Identify gap areas in Dolphin distribution range;

Suggest areas of Research for facilitating long- term conservation of the Dolphin in the river Ganga and its tributaries; and,

Prepare Action Plan for conservation of the Ganges River Dolphin in the Ganga and its tributaries. An International Workshop was held during Feb, 22-23 at Patna on the above Subject. The working Group is expected to submit its report by May, 2010.
