TEMPERATE FOREST RESEARCH INSTITUTE (TFRIS), SHIMLA

ORGANISATION

It was established in 1977 as Regional Research Centre of FRI and Colleges, Dehra Dun. The Centre is now functioning as an idependent Institute under the control of ICFRE and is responsible for the research needs of the hill states of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

OBJECTIVES

The major field of research revolves around the regeneration of temperate forest, afforestation/rehabilitation of cold deserts, forest conservation and ecological rehabilitation of Himalayas.

RESEARCH

The Institute has contributed significantly to artifical regeneration of silver fir (Abies pindrow)and spruce (Picea smithiana) by research on their seed, nursery and planting technology. Other notable achievements of the Centre include,development of nursery and planting technique of broad leaved associates of conifers like oaks,bird cherry, acer, maple and cold desert species of Hippophae, Rosa Webbiana, Prunus armeniaca,poplars and willows; management of alpine pastures and ecological/hydrological studies in different coniferous ecosystems.

PERSPECTIVE IN RESEARCH

• Eco-stablization of cold deserts by afforestation/vegetation measures.

• Improving economy of hills by increasing forest production through social forestry programmes and development of agroforestry models.

• Research in silviculture and ecology of coniferous forests.

• Research on eco-restoration of mined and other degraded areas of western Himalaya.

• Production of improved planting material for agroforestry and production forestry.

• Establishment of seed production areas of Deodar, Fir/Spruce Chir pine and Blue pine.
