A4 DISTRICT WISE FOREST COVER

The unit of planning and development, in India is a district. Therefore, it is imperative to assess the extent of forest cover district-wise so that it may be used in integrated planning. Keeping this in view, district-wise forest cover assessment started in 1991 and this is the fourth attempt to assess the extent of forest cover in various districts of the country.

The total number of districts included in this is 437 which cover the entire geographic area of the country. Althoug the total number of districts in the country is about 540, it has not been possible to furnish forest cover information of each one of them as the boundaries of several districts are not available from SOI and also because district boundaries in many states have undergone frequent changes. As a result information in such cases has been clubbed. The extent of dense, open and mangrove forest cover and the scrub is given in Table 4.1 alongwith changes compared to 1995 assessment except for Andhra Pradesh where comparison is made with 1993 assessment.
