Centre for Mining Environment (CME)

The CME was established in 1987 at the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad with the objective of carrying out research and training in the area of mining environment.

The Centre was taken over by the University Grants Commission (UGC) with effect from 1.3.1994, which is now meeting the expenditure on salary , etc. of the faculty and staff while the expenditure on Research and Develoment is being met by the MOEF.

A Monitoring Committee functioning under the Chairmanship of Secretary (E&F) oversees and guides the research work of the Centre.

Research activities of the CME

• Assessment of the environmental status of Dhanbad town.

• Ecological aspects of Reclamation in Jharia Coalfield.

• Time scale land use study for Jharia Coalfield.

• Pot and Pilot experiments on washery degraded soil.

• Experiments on acidic soil

• Utilisation of flyash.

• Experiments to generate resources out of waste.

• Pilot experiments for utilisation of backfilled area.

• Heavy metal pollution and its bio-accumulation.

• Noise pollution studies in Mooridih Coalmine shaft Complex.

• Noise status in phoshatic fertilizer project of PPCL, Anjohore.

• Clarification of coal washery effluents through coagulation and flocculation.

A total number of 20 R&D projects have been completed by the Centre and 31 projects on various research areas in the field of Mining Environment are in progress.

Other Activities of CME

• A total of 4 executive development programmes of varying durations were organised for mineral industry personnel.

• The 3-emester M.Tech. Programme on Environmental Sciences and Engineering was continued.

• The faculty members of the Centre participated in several national and international seminars/workshos and a total of 17 scientific and technical paper were published in national and international journals.
