AIJ projects

The UNFCCC allows Annex I Parties to implement policies and measures jointly with other Parties to help them stabilize their emissions at 1990 levels. At the first COP, a 'pilot phase of activities implemented jointly' (AIJ) was launched, under which, Parties may implement projects on a voluntary basis that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, or enhance removals of greenhouse gases by 'sinks', in addition to what would have occurred otherwise, in the territories of other Parties. However, no credits may accrue to any Party for such reductions or removals. The pilot phase is intended to build experience through 'learning by doing', for example in establishing baselines and estimating the environmental benefits of the project.
