India
Climate-friendly development
Description
Climate change is one of the greatest
challenges that the global community has ever faced. It is being addressed collectively
through the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change; 10 years after it was
opened for signatures at the Rio Earth Summit, the Parties to the Convention meet in New
Delhi, India, during 23 October-1 November 2002.
For India and other developing countries,
climate change is a potential threat to sustainable development. This book highlights
India's key concerns, and describes the way in which the country is responding to them.
Through a multitude of government, private, and individual initiatives, the country is
making serious efforts to conserve energy, harness renewables, protect forests, and
enhance understanding about climate change. By adopting this climate-friendly path to
development, India is contributing effectively to global efforts for protecting our
planet.
